Have some time to kill? Here’s our pick of places to while away the day.
Whether laying back in a Balinese deck chair at The Jetty or sprawling out in the sun on the River Quay Green, this is one location that continues to enchant all who visit. Iridescent in streaming sunlight and spellbinding even in overcast weather, River Quay feels like an oasis just a stone’s throw from Brisbane’s largest cultural precinct and the CBD. It’s also one of three designated areas within the Parklands where you can kick back and enjoy a brew (responsibly of course). While you’re there, why not grab a takeaway picnic and tallie from Tomahawk or add a dash of romance with a hamper package from Aquitaine, available for pick up at the bar. The options are endless at River Quay. Enjoy the weekly vibes at Sunday Sessions or come down during the week for some serenity and lush views.
You could get lost for hours amongst the shelves in TITLE. This is a place that seeks out EPs and vinyls from independent artists and supports the local music scene, so when you walk into TITLE, you’ll find something really special that you can’t get anywhere else, (and you’ll probably spend hours browsing through their collections). The store has its own distinctive style, which is also reflected in the books, documentaries, box sets, t-shirts, and playful stationary that line its walls. It’s a fantastic place to amble down to and while away a few hours – plus the staff are always more than happy to help you find something new and interesting.
You have some time, so why not indulge and get your hair done while you’re here? Whether you need a fully fledged colour and cut or want to get a refreshing blowdry, Corcorz has a treatment, wash, cut, or styling service to make you feel pampered and relaxed. You’re in safe hands here too, with fully trained and talented stylists who understand the artistry in hairdressing.
The Charming Squire
One of South Bank’s newer kids on the block is The Charming Squire, and his wily reputation definitely precedes him. Renowned for being a bit of a rogue gent (he did incur 150 lashes after all), Mr Squire’s legend lives on at his Brisbane brewhouse where you’ll not only find a wall-splattered homage to his exploits, but also a full menu of James Squire beers and ciders, wood-fired beef cuts, dishes faring from both land and sea, and a sweet little selection of desserts to top it off. It’s a great place to read up on this devilish chap, enjoy a brew, or unwind with friends. Plus the space is so large, you can waste some time simply exploring it!
This gorgeous weather makes Streets Beach a time-wasting temptation you really can’t resist, and why should you? Its sandy beaches are pristine and surrounded by a sparkling, inviting lagoon that you won’t find anywhere else in Brisbane. Take a leisurely dip in the water, stretch out on a towel on the sand with a magazine and ice cream from South Bank Beach News, or find shade underneath the palms and subtropical plants. If you stick around for lunch, grab a quick wrap and Peri Peri chips from Nando’s or set up shop for a relaxing long lunch at South Bank Surf Club.
Arbour View Cafes
Set up shop at the Arbour View Cafes with a feast of foodie options surrounding a casual seating area, flanked by the picturesque arbour. Witnessing the sunlight streaming through the bougainvilleas entwining around the arbour is truly a sight to behold, and it’s made even better when you have a snack at your fingertips. Grab a quick eat from Boost or Cold Rock or tuck in to a lunchtime feast from The Crepe Café or Subway. The tranquil arbour views and laid-back a la carte dining style makes you feel like you could spend hours in this spot, making it the perfect place to kill time.
